Nintendo Co., Ltd. (任天堂株式会社 Nintendō Kabushiki gaisha) Nintendo Company Limited (previously known as Nintendo Karuta Co., Ltd and The Nintendo Playing Card Co.), is a Japanese multinational consumer electronics and video game company headquartered in Kyoto, Japan. Nintendo is one of the world's largest video game companies by market capitalization. Founded on 23 September 1889 by Fusajiro Yamauchi, it originally produced handmade hanafuda playing cards. By 1963, the company had tried several small niche businesses, such as cab services and love hotels. The word Nintendo can be roughly translated from Japanese to English as "leave luck to heaven".
amiibo (アミーボ, amībo) is Nintendo's wireless communications and storage protocol, for use between compatible toys-to-life figurines, and the Nintendo 3DS, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch gaming platforms. It was launched in November 2014 in the form of system software updates and a series of amiibo-enabled figurines. These figurines are similar in form and functionality to that of the Skylanders and Disney Infinity series. The platform was preannounced to potentially accommodate any form of figurine, specifically including general plans for future card games. These figurines use near field communication (NFC) to interact with supported video game software, potentially allowing data to be transferred in and out of games and across multiple platforms.
